If you work in mining, Western Australia remains one of the biggest opportunities in the Australian resources sector.

Investment in WA’s mining and petroleum industries reached a decade-high $34 billion in 2025, representing 62% of national mining and petroleum investment. Mineral exploration also reached a record $2.7 billion.

WA’s mining sector had more than 136,000 on-site full-time equivalent jobs in 2025. Gold employment grew by more than 5,000 FTEs, while iron ore employment grew by more than 1,000 FTEs. Growth in those commodities offset employment declines in nickel and lithium.

For people looking for WA mining jobs, gold and iron ore are currently among the key sources of employment growth.

More mining jobs are coming

The longer-term pipeline is also significant.

The Australian Resources & Energy Employer Association's 2025 to 2030 workforce forecast identified 96 major resources and energy projects across Australia, valued at $129.5 billion, with forecast demand for 22,279 new operating-phase jobs by 2030.

WA accounts for 42 of those projects, valued at $81.8 billion and forecast to create demand for 8,924 additional workers.

Gold is a major part of that pipeline. AREEA identified 11 WA gold projects requiring around 2,400 new workers, alongside four iron ore projects requiring around 1,200 workers.

That means opportunities are continuing to emerge across mining operations, maintenance, technical roles and other resources positions.

Gold is a key area of growth

Gold is currently one of WA's strongest-performing commodities.

Gold employment grew by more than 5,000 FTEs during 2025, taking total on-site gold mining employment to 38,816 FTEs. Gold exploration expenditure also reached a record almost $1.3 billion.

The WA Government also reports that several gold projects have moved into development, including the Ravensthorpe project, alongside other projects and expansions.

For experienced mining professionals and tradespeople, that activity creates opportunities across the gold sector.
