This week meet our Senior Commercial Construction Consultant, Ryan Wakelin. Originally from New Zealand, Ryan moved to Australia in 2012 during a 'spur of the moment decision,' since then Ryan has resided in Melbourne after developing an appreciation for it's culture, art, and hospitality. With sales experience peppering his resume, Ryan fell into recruitment 4 years ago by what he can only describe as 'pure chance.'

Off the clock you'll find him boxing, playing hockey or at the pub with mates watching the rugby or UFC.

Read his full Q&A below.

Name: Ryan Wakelin
Position: Senior Recruiter
Time in Role: 1 year

Tell us a bit about your career to date and how you got into Recruitment.
Outside of lockdowns and COVID-19 hiccups, my recruitment career has been great! All up, I have worked in Commercial Construction space for over 4 years across Tier 1,2 & 3 Construction and Fitout contractors, and I genuinely enjoy working in the space. How I got into recruitment was pure chance - when I was leaving my previous industry I interviewed in loads of different sectors at the time and ended up in Recruitment!

What’s your favourite thing about working at Fetch?
The culture of the business is great, also having complete autonomy to recruit the way I want to recruit and work with some great builders/clients.

What’s one thing you wish people knew about recruitment or your industry?
That there's a lot more that goes into the process than it looks like from the outside!

Why did you move from New Zealand to Australia?
I honestly don't know, it was a spur of the moment decision and loved it when I got here.

What made you stay in Melbourne:
The hospitality scene, the restaurants and cafes are some of the best in the world. Also the culture and art around the city is great.

If you were on death row, what would be your last meal?
A massive seafood platter (loads of lobster) or a filthy KFC box….

Name three things right now you are grateful for.
My health, friends and no lockdown.

Tell us a #FunFact about you!
When I was younger I played the Violin for 3 years.

One job I’m recruiting for RIGHT NOW is:
Not one, I’m recruiting about 20 (CAs, Site Managers, Project Managers, Coordinators, OHS) – Get in touch if you work in commercial construction! 0492 188 335
